I definitely subscribe to seasonal perfumes. Overly sweet gourmands or heavy scents make me a bit ill in hot weather, and I have no desire to wear light or bright fragrances when its cold. When it gets hot-hot--which it hasn't yet and not-so-secretly I hope it never does--my favorites are the original Hermes Eau de Merveilles with it's dry aromatic qualities, the cold and dry Hermes Hiris, and the sharp neon green of Chanel Crystalle Eau Verte. I generally like most cologne-style fragrances in the summer, like Guerlain Cologne du Parfumeur, Mugler Cologne Come Together, and Chanel Les Exclusifs Eau de Cologne.

Right now, it's 55F in Baltimore and I am bundled in a thick sweater and reeking of 1907 Vanilla Dry, which so far I can wear into the mid-70s, but will have to put it away when it gets warmer than that.

Thanks for sharing! Love all of this and it makes total sense! Also I hope it warms up over there.

Another reader from Baltimore here! Since I've moved here from Chicago in 2019 I've been on the hunt for perfume shops and/or scent swaps. If you have any recs for IRL smelling possibilities in the DMV, please share!

Hi Mia! As you might have noticed, we have nothing here in Baltimore, fume-wise. Have you been to Arielle Shoshana in NoVA? I've been itching to visit there and make a side trip to Tysons Corner to shop the high-end boutiques and Neiman's. There's Perfumology in Philly, which isn't the DMV but can be done in a day trip. I normally go to NY a couple times a year to sniff. Would love to chat more. :)

I didn't know about this place in Fairfax, but frankly it's probably less of a hassle to get to Philly than NoVA...although I hear the shopping is good in Tyson's. I normally get my fixes between NY and Chicago. Thinking of trying some online decants based on our latest newsletter. Next month I have a wedding in SF so I've got some stops to make there. I will figure out a way to DM you here!

I wish I liked the actual scent on me more! I'm so jasmine obsessed but that one is not for me!

Invisible Post by 1969 - tangerine and green fig somehow smell like Florida's palmetto trees in the best way possible.

Inis - An "Irish Cologne" that means island which is sold all through the panhandle at lady boutiques and smells EXACTLY like CK One of yore, so another heavy summer scent that reminds me of growing up in Florida.

Gucci Flora Gorgeous Orchid - A pretty straight forward vanilla with a powdery, floral dry down. A mall smell for sure, but more off-dry than you'd expect for the target audience.

Christina, my heart skipped a beat when you said plumeria. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to smelling that new Arquiste. As greenery has just popped up north, I’m enjoying my decidedly spring scents: Universal Flowering Lilac No 4 and Dusita Cavatina (if you had told me I would ever own a lily of the valley scent… but I feel regal and unflappable in this one)

Such a fan of Dusita too!! And Universal Flowering. I think you’ll probably like Tropical!

For me this summer I’ll be leaning into: Ladri di Fichi from Inverso, Tesoro from D:SOL, Delfiño from Pineward, Mantes La Jolie from Astier de Villatte aaaaand Tubereuse Criminelle (until my sample runs out). The weirdly fresh August 7th 2088 from Rundholz will also get some wear probably. Kind of a long list but summers are long and brutal in Texas, so I’ve got to make it from now until November basically 🥵

So many beautiful ones, as always. I just got a small bottle of Mantes La Jolie and it’s such a good one for a hot humid summer.

It’s such a stunning scent. I can’t imagine a time when I’m not obsessed with Mantes la Jolie. It also seems to last longer on me when it’s hot and humid for some reason. I’d have thought the opposite. Go figure!
